3D Production Pipeline

Dreamworks  Approch To Creating A Film:

DEVELOPMENT :

  • Script: Some of the ideas that Dreamworks use are oring

inal, some of their ideas are also inspiried by the use of childrens books for example shrek, if you compare the fairytale little Red Ridinghood to shrek there are some similarties. once they have agreed on an idea the start to write the script.

  • Storyboards :  Once the script has been finalised it is then handed over to the storyboard artist. these artist then create a series of skectches. once they have been agreed with the producers & directors the drawings are digitally photographed and put together into a story reel. they use temporary music, dialogue & sound effects, this could be done for upto 18 months in that form

  • Visual Development: it’s now passed onto the visual development department, here the department work on how the film is going to look. they develope the stlye, look, tone & colour and its overall artistic approch to each scene. everything has to be designed, from the characters to the props. in this process  thousands of drawings, models and painting are made.

  • Casting: At this stage all the props and models are done and the next stage is to find the cast for the voices for the film so that they can be recorded. normallt they start recording the actors voice before animating because it would be difficult they normally work on the actors voice expressions, reactions.

PRE – PRODUCTION:

  • Modeling: from the design created earlier in the process the modelers will construct a  digital 3D model which will be used for planning & animation.

  • Rigging: the artist will start with wire frame sculptures which is called an armature, that will break down the design into working geometry & it allows them to rig the model/figure. it give the animator the freedom to move the figue about

  • Basic Surface: once the structure is built the artist can begin to add the basics to the structure

  • Layout: the layout artist use normally a rough stand in to block out any movement from the character in the scene. the rough layout is the blueprint which the artist can determin the carama angle, character placement, spacing & scene timing.

PRODUCTION:

  • Character Animation: Once the scene is working in the layout department the animator starts to bring the character to life using computer technolgy. they get the thousands of sounds that were created in the character rigging process to bring the character to life and to syncronize them to the voices that were recorded earlier in the proess.

  • Effects/Lighting: After the camera moves and everything else is set it’s time to add the effects to the scenes. in computer animation these things are created & animated by an effects artist. for example a wave it looks blocky and plain. they start by animating the surface of the wave or were the waves gonna come from. next they visualise the surrounding enviroment. they may add foam onto the surface and bubbles under the surface to give it that water effect. also not forgetting the splash & water spray, when all is combined and finished it sent to the kighting department. there the final little textures are added

POST PRODUCTION:

  • Final Touches: thoughout the whole production  (4 years) theya re ready to add the sound effects, soundtrack, the final score, correct the colour, make digital prints and release the film nation wide and internatally

There we have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
